Need A Bail Bond? Here Are 3 Items To Use As Collateral

Jordy De Pijper

Landing yourself behind bars is one thing, but having to ask someone bail you out is something entirely different. The person on the outside is left trying to make sense of everything and figure out how to best proceed and who to contact to get you out. If you were granted a bond and have someone on the outside who can help, a bail bondsman might be able to help. Even if the party doesn't have a lot of cash, they can get the help they need using collateral. Here are three common items that a bondsman will take as collateral on a bond.

Vehicle titles.

If there is a vehicle that is paid off and worth a fair amount of money, the bondsman will often take that as a form of collateral. The title will initially be signed over to the bondsman and they will hold onto it until after the trial and sentencing are done. If the individual being charged goes to all of their court appearances, the title is returned at the end of the case. During the time the case is going on, the individual who signed the bond papers will still get to drive the vehicle and use it like normal.

Land deeds.

If there is a parcel of land worth the amount of the bond, that can often be used as well. The same thing applies here; the deed would have to be signed over and would be held by the bondsman until the case is done and over with. You are free to use the land like normal and the deed is returned at the end of the case when sentencing is done and over with.

Furs and jewelry.

In the case of furs and jewelry, the items would be given to the bondsman for safekeeping. You will not be able to use these items during this time, but they are returned at the end of the case. This is one of the few times where you have to actually give the items to the bondsman for them to hold on to. The reasoning is because they don't have a title to them so there is no way for the bondsman to claim ownership if the individual didn't do what they were supposed to on their case.

With there being so many different options available to use as collateral, one is sure to work in your case.
